History of Woodland Heritage

Woodland Heritage Northeast Limited and its parent companies, Woodland Heritage Services and Settlement Surveys Limited, began archaeological work in Ontario in the mid 1970s.  Dr. John Pollock (associate) worked as the regional archaeologist out of Cochrane for the Heritage Branch during this time, and Michael O’Connor completed a degree in Native Studies at Laurentian prior to beginning work in Lake Superior Provincial Park for the Sault Ste. Marie office.

in 1999 Woodland Heritage Services was established and Ryan Primrose joined John at the New LIskeard office.  During this period Woodland Heritage Services developed archaeological site location modelling expertise, and in the early 2010s this modelling experience began to include paleo landscape reconstruction and modelling of post-glacial lake shoreline features.  The technique was proven in 2012 with the location of archaeological sites in the Agassiz basin when sites along the Tintah and Campbell shorelines were identified, kilometres from the closest modern water.

To date Woodland Heritage Northeast and its progenitors have completed  well over 1000 archaeological studies over its 40 plus years of consulting.  From its outset we have involved First Nation Communities and other indigenous groups  in the archaeological process, providing meaningful opportunities and engagement .  Woodland Heritage Northeast principal’s not-for-profit organisation, the Ontario Centre for Archaeological Research and Education is currently working directly with First Nation Communities to build capacity for both First Nation archaeologists, and curatorial experience, among other endeavours.

Woodland Heritage Northeast has experience working with all types of resource and infrastructure clients, as well as municipalities, ministries, and the development community.

Our assessments will ensure that your project will be in compliance and obtain clearance while maintaining a high standard of documentation and professionalism.

  2. Stage 2 ARCHAEOLOGICAL RESOURCE ASSESSMENT – SURVEYING THE LAND FOR ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITES
  3. Stage 3 ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITE-SPECIFIC ASSESSMENT – DETERMINE EXTENT, DENSITY, AND POTENTIAL CHRONOLOGY AN ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITE
  4. Stage 4 ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITE-SPECIFIC ASSESSMENT – MITIGATION THROUGH EITHER AVOIDANCE AND PROTECTION, OR EXCAVATION, OR A COMBINATION OF THE TWO
